Influencer marketing is the practice of partnering with individuals who have an established, engaged audience — on social media, YouTube, podcasts, or other platforms — to promote your product or service to their followers.
Influencer marketing operates on borrowed trust: an influencer's audience trusts their recommendations, so a well-matched partnership transfers some of that credibility to your brand. Influencers are typically categorized by audience size: nano (1K–10K followers), micro (10K–100K), macro (100K–1M), and mega or celebrity (1M+). Micro and nano influencers often deliver higher engagement rates and more targeted audiences at a fraction of the cost of mega influencers — making them particularly attractive for niche B2C brands and service businesses targeting specific demographics or interests.
Engagement structures vary widely: sponsored posts (one-off paid placements), long-term brand ambassador agreements, affiliate/commission arrangements (where the influencer earns a percentage of sales they generate), product seeding (sending products in exchange for organic coverage), and co-created content (where the brand and influencer jointly develop a campaign). Each model has different cost, risk, and authenticity profiles. Affiliate arrangements align incentives well but require sufficient influencer credibility to drive purchase action. Paid placements deliver predictable reach but must be disclosed as ads and can feel less authentic.
Vetting influencers is critical and non-obvious. Raw follower counts are unreliable signals — follower fraud is widespread. Professional influencer assessment examines engagement rate (likes + comments ÷ followers), audience quality (real vs. bot followers), audience demographics (age, gender, geography), content quality, and brand safety (past controversies or misaligned values). Done well, influencer marketing can deliver highly efficient customer acquisition — especially in markets where consumers are increasingly resistant to traditional advertising. For brands entering a new market or building awareness in a crowded category, a well-structured influencer program often outperforms paid social on a cost-per-acquisition basis — but only when the strategic and operational work behind it is handled by someone who has built and measured these programs before.
